Our two-player classics — Chess, Checkers, Pool, Connect 4, Tic Tac Toe, Battleships and Rummy — each have a line-up of ten computer opponents, each with their own face and personality, from happy beginners who are still learning the rules up to Pete, the smug old master and the toughest opponent of them all. Beat one to unlock the next and work your way up the ladder.

Games you can play

A new daily challenge every day

Each day there's a fresh challenge in a different game, plus a new Word of the Day — the same deal or the same opponent for everyone — with its own leaderboard. It changes over at midnight GMT, so there's always a reason to come back and try something new.

Play with friends

Add friends by username, challenge them to a game and play at your own pace — you'll see whose turn it is on the home page. Every profile shows your head-to-head record, your badges and how far you've climbed the Beat Pete ladder. You can keep your profile for friends only, hide from the public leaderboards, and block or report anyone who spoils the fun.

Frequently asked questions

Is Beat Pete free?

Yes. Every game is free to play in your browser, on your phone, tablet or computer. There is nothing to download.

Can I play against the computer?

Yes. Chess, Checkers, Pool, Connect 4, Tic Tac Toe, Battleships and Rummy have ten computer opponents, from happy beginners up to Pete, the hardest of them all. Beat one to unlock the next. Guests can play Trevor, the first opponent, in every ladder game; a free account unlocks the rest of the ladder. Hearts is played against three computer players. Solitaire, Minesweeper, Sudoku, Wordgrid and Pete’s Word of the Day are solo puzzles, and the arcade games — Snake, Chomper, Invaders and Blocks — are solo high-score chases.

Can I play with my friends?

Yes. Create a free account, add your friends and challenge them to Chess, Checkers, Pool, Connect 4, Tic Tac Toe, Battleships or Rummy. Rummy takes up to four players, each on their own device. Chess, Checkers, Pool, Connect 4, Tic Tac Toe and Battleships also have a quick “play someone online” match. You can see your head-to-head record against each friend.

Do I need an account?

No — you can start straight away as a guest and play Trevor, the first opponent, in every ladder game. A free account unlocks the other nine opponents, saves your scores to the leaderboards, keeps your games on every device and lets you play friends. Pete’s Word of the Day also needs a free account.

Is there a daily challenge?

Yes. Every day there is a new challenge in a different game, the same for everyone, with its own leaderboard, plus Pete’s Word of the Day for members. They reset at midnight GMT.
