How to play 100m Sprint
Here’s how to play 100m Sprint: it’s a free, old-school button-bashing track and field game in your browser. Alternate the left and right buttons as fast as you can and race down the 100 metres against the Beat Pete characters, all the way up to Pete himself.
Wait for the gun, then tap left, right, left, right. A steady rhythm pushes you harder than a frantic one, and hitting the same side twice makes you stumble. Beat a character to unlock the next, and chase the fastest time on the leaderboard. Below you’ll find the full rules, tips and some common questions.
The basics
The 100 metres, button-bashing style. Alternate the two buttons as fast as you can and run down the track faster than the character in the next lane.
Running
- Tap left, then right, then left… Every alternating tap gives you a push. Between taps you slow down, so keep going.
- Hitting the same side twice is a stumble: no push, and you lose a little speed.
- A steady rhythm pushes harder than ragged tapping, so don’t just thrash.
- Controls: tap the two pads with your thumbs, one on each. The Pause button stops the race.
- Phones and tablets only. Keys are far quicker than thumbs, so Track & Field isn’t playable with a keyboard or mouse. That keeps every record, and every friend duel, fair.
The start
- “On your marks… set…” then the gun, after a random wait. Don’t move early!
- A tap before the gun, or within a tenth of a second of it, is a false start. The second false start disqualifies you.
The ladder
- You race one of the ten characters, from level 1 up to Pete. Beat a character to unlock the next.
- Four more runners fill the other lanes, six of you in all, but only the character you chose decides whether it counts as a win. Your finishing place is shown too.
Times
- Your fastest winning time goes on the leaderboard, to the hundredth of a second. The server checks the numbers add up before it counts.
Beginner tips
- Keep a steady beat. Even, rhythmic taps push harder than thrashing, and they don’t cause stumbles.
- Use both thumbs, one on each pad.
- Stay calm at the start. A false start costs you the race, and two disqualify you. Wait for the gun.
- Every stumble costs speed, so if you lose your rhythm slow down for a beat and pick it up again.
Frequently asked questions
How do I play 100m Sprint on a phone?
Use the two big pads at the bottom of the screen and alternate them with your thumbs: left, right, left, right. The game is for phones and tablets only, because keys would be far quicker and records wouldn’t be fair.
What is a false start?
Tapping before the starting gun, or within a tenth of a second of it. The first one restarts the race; a second false start disqualifies you.
What happens if I tap the same side twice?
You stumble: that tap gives no push and you lose a little speed. Always alternate.
How fast can you run the 100m?
Cleanly alternating at full speed is worth about 10 to 11 seconds, and Pete runs about 10.5. Nothing under 9.6 seconds is possible (the world record is 9.58), and the server rejects anything faster.
How is it ranked?
By your fastest winning time, to the hundredth of a second. You win by finishing ahead of the character you chose to race.
