Beat Pete ("we", "us") provides free browser games at beatpete.co.uk. This page explains what information we collect when you use the site and why.
Information we collect
- Account details — username, email address and a securely hashed password (or, if you sign in with Google or Facebook, your Google or Facebook account ID and the name and email they share with us — plus your Google photo). We never see or store your Google or Facebook password.
- Profile info you choose to add — display name, profile photo (one you upload, or your Google photo if you choose to use it), country, date of birth and social media handles. Each has its own "who can see this" setting. Your date of birth is never shown to anyone: if you choose to show it, other people see only your age.
- Gameplay data — scores, game results, saved games, friend connections, activity, badges and history, so we can run leaderboards, matchmaking and your friends list. If you join through a friend's share link, we record who invited you so they can earn recruiter badges.
- Help chat — if you use the Help chat (for logged-in members), we keep the questions you ask and the answers shown, along with any message you send to the team, for up to 90 days so we can improve the answers and fix problems early. Please don't type passwords or other sensitive details into it.
- Push notification tokens — if you turn on push notifications (in your browser, or in the Beat Pete app on iPhone or Android), we store a device token or browser push address so we can send them. We use it only to notify you about things like friend requests, game invitations, streak reminders and leaderboard changes, never for advertising. You can switch notifications off at any time in Settings, or in your phone’s settings, and the token is deleted when you do, when you log out, or when you delete your account.
- Technical data — IP address and basic request logs, used only for security (rate-limiting, abuse prevention) and anonymous page-view counts. When you log in or register we also store a scrambled (keyed-hash) version of your connection's IP address, never the address itself, so that we can spot one person running several accounts and keep the leaderboards fair. These are kept for up to 120 days and are deleted with your account. If a page on the site hits a script error, we log the error message and your browser type (not your account or IP) for up to 45 days so we can fix it. We also note which website, search engine or link sent a visitor to us (for example "google" or the address of a page that links to us), so we can see how people find the site. This uses a daily-changing anonymous code rather than a cookie, and it isn't linked to your account.
How we use it
To run your account, save your progress, show leaderboards and friend activity, keep the site secure, and email you things you've asked for (like a password reset link). We don't sell your data, and we don't use it for advertising profiling.
Cookies and device storage
We use one essential cookie to keep you signed in. We don't use tracking cookies of our own. Your browser's local storage also keeps your settings and in-progress games on your device. If you use Google Sign-In or Continue with Facebook, Google or Facebook may set their own cookies while their button and sign-in window are shown; see Google's and Meta's privacy policies.
Advertising
We show advertising from Google AdSense on some pages and on the result screen after a game (never during a game). Where ads are shown, Google and its advertising partners may use cookies or similar technologies to show and measure ads, and to personalise them if you allow it. If you are in the UK, the European Economic Area or Switzerland you will be asked for your consent first, and you can say no or change your mind at any time. You can also learn more or opt out of personalised ads at Google's advertising page and Your Online Choices.
Anonymous visit statistics
To see which devices, browsers and countries people use, each page view records a rough device type (for example Android or Windows), the browser, whether the site was opened in a browser or as an installed app, and the country. The country is worked out on our own server from your IP address using the free IP-to-country list from DB-IP (IP geolocation by DB-IP.com); your IP address itself is not stored with these statistics and nothing is sent to anyone else.
Sharing
We don't share your personal information with third parties, other than the service providers needed to run the site (hosting and email delivery) and, if you choose to use them, Google Sign-In and Facebook Login.
Your choices
You can edit or delete most of your profile information at any time from your account settings, and you can permanently delete your account and all associated data from the same place. You can also hide yourself from public leaderboards, make your profile friends-only, and block or report other players. If we suspend an account for breaking the terms, we keep the reason for the suspension.
Deleting your data (including Facebook / Google sign-in)
To delete your account and everything linked to it, including a connected Facebook or Google ID: log in, open your profile, go to Settings, then Account, and choose Delete account. Everything is removed straight away. If you can't log in, email help@beatpete.co.uk from the address on your account (or tell us your username) and we'll delete it for you. Removing Beat Pete from your Facebook settings stops it receiving new information from Facebook but doesn't delete your Beat Pete account — use the steps above for that.
Children
Beat Pete is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
